SAQ - new test transmission on 17.2 kHz

"The reason for the trouble with SAQ on Christmas Eve was most probably a damaged fuse in the excitation circuit for the 500 V DC generator. The fuse was not completely blown but measured a very high resistance (150 ohm). When we lost the excitation current to the DC generator, we also lost the control current to the choke coils in the conductors to the main motor, and thereby the speed control of the alternator was lost. It was confusing that the problem occurred exactly when we connected the running alternator to the antenna. We were actually on air a few seconds with decreasing frequency until the antenna was disconnected by the protection circuit in the speed control."
Because of the missing Christmas Eve transmission there will be a SAQ test transmission on Tuesday 10th, 2012 at 13:30 UTC. There will only be a transmission with "VVV VVV VVV DE SAQ SAQ SAQ" running for about 30 minutes and no message. There will be no QSL-card exchange for this test.

He will enter the CQ WW DX SSB CONTEST as SOAB Low Power Non Assisted (October 29-30).

SAQ/Grimeton Radio extra transmissions

There will be two extra transmissions with the Alexanderson alternator on 17.2 kHz because of the United Nations day, Monday October 24, 2011.
The first transmission is a special transmission from young students in Sweden and will start up tuning at about 10:10 UTC and with a message at 10:30 UTC. The second transmission will start up tuning at 17:30 UTC and a message at 18:00 UTC.
QSL-reports on these transmissions are not required.

28 & 24 MHz intruders - Alarming report by DK2OM

Hi friends,
28 - 29.7 MHz is completely over-flooded by CIS taxis in FM (Russia, Belorussia and Ukraine). The woman on 28195 is located in Kiev (UKR), the taxi service on 28155 transmitting from Russia. 28200 is also abused by Russian military, F1B, 100 Bd, 150 Hz, vocoder Yakhta synchro signal, located in UFA, Russia. Uli (DJ9KR) and me need few seconds to hear if a language is Russian or Arabic. Arabic voices are very rare on 28 MHz. The last days I found CIS taxis even on 25100. One day they will destroy our 24 MHz band, too.
Another large problem are the Codar HF Radars on 24 MHz. They are transmitting with 2 sweeps/sec, sounding a bit like a pasture fence. (PSE look for the soundfiles on www.iarums-r1.org) K0BOG, Chuck, is interested in such signals. I think we should help him with observations and reports. A worldwide collection of Codars on our bands will help to show the unkind and sometimes bold methods of these people. The signals are stretching over 100 - 500 kHz!!! If you are not sure if you have found a Codar, send me WAV-file (44 kHz sampling rate appreciated - 5 MB no problem). Analysing digital signals on our bands is my daily job.

Op 1 november 1944 werd Knokke bevrijd door de Canadese troepen die een uitputtend gevecht geleverd hebben in het Belgische kustgebied. Ieder jaar herdenken de inwoners van Knokke Heist de talrijke gesneuvelde Canadese soldaten tijdens de Canadese Week. Ook dit jaar verlenen tal van radioamateurs van de UBA-sectie ONZ Oosthoek hun medewerking aan deze Canadese Week.
Dit jaar is ons de speciale toestemming gegeven door het BIPT om de speciale prefix ON30 te gebruiken naar aanleiding van de 30ste verjaardag van het radiostation ON4CLM. Het Special Event Radio Station ON30CLM (de suffix staat voor Canadian Liberation March) zal reeds te contacteren zijn van heden tot en met 31 december 2011. ON4RSX - 150 jaar Spoor Ronse-Oudenaarde

ON4RSX, clubstation van de sectie Ronse activeert hun stationssite! Tijdens het weekend van 10 en 11 september 2011 gaat de viering door van “150 jaar Spoorwegen tussen de steden Ronse en Oudenaarde”. De “vzw Toerisme en Spoor Patrimonium / Patrimoine Ferroviaire et Tourisme asbl” rijdt zowel op zaterdag als op zondag telkens vier pendelritten tussen Ronse en Oudenaarde met een unieke historische reizigerstrein samengesteld uit “K-rijtuigen 1ste klasse”, waarvan de tractie verzorgd wordt door hun stoomlocomotief “Type 64.169” (een “Pruisische P8” of de latere “Duitse BR38” uit het bouwjaar 1923, concept 1907 – zie foto hierbij).
Ter gelegenheid van deze feestelijke viering activeert de sectie RSX uit Ronse een uitgebreid radioamateurstation vanop de stationssite. Het clubstation ON4RSX zal op beide dagen tussen 9u30 en 18u30 onafgebroken in de lucht zijn op decameter en VHF, zowel in CW als in SSB, FM en digimodes. Voor de geïnteresseerden in het “Belgian Railway Station Award” wordt het station van Ronse geactiveerd onder het referentienummer “FRN-86”. Een unieke gelegenheid om ook het station van Ronse aan uw logboek toe te voegen, wat u zo mogelijk terug wat dichter bij uw Award brengt… De activatie van de stationssite van Ronse door het clubstation ON4RSX werd mede mogelijk gemaakt dankzij de bereidwillige medewerking van dhr. Geert Dierickx, Woordvoerder, Districtsdirecteur NMBS-Holding NW-Communicatie.

Zaterdag 24 september a.s. (1 dag later dan gepland) zullen ze voor de tweede keer koers zetten naar het kleinste eiland in de Atlantische Oceaan Rockall EU-189.
Rockall is de meest geïsoleerde rots omgeven door water ter wereld. Het is een heel klein eiland, eigenlijk een rots, ligt ongeveer 366 km ten westen van Benbecula in de Buiten-Hebriden en 430 km van het dichtstbijzijnde punt op het Ierse vasteland. De rots meet circa 25 m op de noord-zuid-as en 22 m op de oost-west-as, de top is slechts 19,2 m asl. De rots is gelegen op de Rockall Bank: een Atlantische rug gescheiden van het Europees continentaal plat door de Rockall Trog. Het betreedbaar vlakke gebied op Rockall, werd in 1955 "Ledge Hall" genoemd naar de eerste geregistreerde persoon die de rots betrad. Die plek is slechts 3,5 m bij 1,3 m en ligt 4 m onder de top... En dat is uitgerekend de plek vanwaar de rockall-ploeg 2011 QRV zal zijn!

Zo werd er geen valse hoop gewekt naar de radioamateurwereld toe."
Ondertussen, na vele maanden van intensief werken, is het team klaar om op vrijdag 23 september 2011 naar Rockall te vertrekken! Om de slaagkans te maximaliseren en niets aan het toeval te willen overlaten werd een echt expeditieschip gecharterd voorzien van de nodige materialen, waaronder 2 zware zodiacs en zelfs een helikopter. "Het is nog steeds onze bedoeling om met 2 stations 48 u op de rots QRV te zijn" gaat de Genkse radio-amateur verder, "en eerstdaags zullen wij onze plannen bekendmaken via de website http://www.rockall.be".
Voor het nieuw avontuur is het team nog op zoek naar twee operatoren met enige (contest)ervaring en ook enkele mensen die de crew op de boot willen bijstaan.

Op 3 en 4 september 2011 activeert de Radio club van Binche het station ON4WAR ter herdenking van de offers gebracht door de Belgische Weerstand (WW II) en in het bijzonder die van de Refuge B 40 in Waudrez (België).
Het tijdschema van de activiteiten ziet er als volgt uit:

The UBA section RSX is planning a Belgian-French expedition from 08/08/2011 to 14/08/2011 in the southern part of Belgium, next to the city Gedinne, on the summit called "Croix-Scaille". This expedition is in collaboration with the French radioclub F5KFL from Neuville de Poitou.
About 15 operators will be QRV on all HF bands (5 stations) in SSB and CW with the special call ON18CS. Each QSO will be confirmed with a special QSL via bureau. On Saturday 13 August: open doors, if you want to visit (145,500 MHz).

Het team onder leiding van Jean Jacques ON7EQ zal er vanaf vrijdagavond 29 juli tot en met zondag 31 juli 12u UTC QRV zijn vanop het eiland (IOTA-ref EU-039) in SSB & CW op alle HF-banden. Een unieke kans om deze IOTA-referentie te werken daar dit eiland - natuurreservaat - gewoonlijk verlaten is.

Belgische radioamateurs uit Liège en Brussel (BRULGE Team) en Franse radioamateurs uit Finistère (dept. 29) slaan de handen in mekaar om TM1G te activeren tijdens de IOTA 2011 contest vanop de Glenan archipel van 27 juli 2011 tot en met 3 augustus 2011.
Tijdens de IOTA contest werkt TM1G vanop het eiland Saint Nicolas (EU-094) op 10-15-20-40-80m in SSB en CW. Alle radioamateurs worden uitgenodigd om TM1G te werken en punten voor de contest te geven.
Na de contest blijven 2 stations gedurende 3 dagen QRV op Saint-Nicolas Is. met bijzondere aandacht voor traffic op de WARC-banden en digitale modes (RTTY/PSK31-63-125). Gedurende deze periode zal een tweede team andere eilanden van de archipel aandoen: Cigogne eiland op 1 augustus, Penfret eiland op 2 augustus en Bananec eiland op 3 augustus.

South Sudan - DXCC entity

On Thursday, July 14, the UN General Assembly met to vote on whether or not to admit the Republic of South Sudan as its 193rd member state. The Republic of South Sudan was admitted by a vote of acclamation and is now a member of the United Nations.
Now that the Republic of South Sudan is a member of the United Nations, the new country is now a DXCC entity by way of Section II, 1(a) of the DXCC rules. The DXCC Desk will begin immediately accepting QSOs for this new entity, with a start date of July 14, 2011. According to DXCC Manager Bill Moore, NC1L, the Honor Roll numbers move from 340 to 341 for the Top of the Honor Roll, and for Honor Roll it becomes 332. “The deadline for the Honor Roll and annual listings is December 31, so you must submit the new entity to DXCC by then in order to retain your Honor Roll status,” Moore explained. “For Logbook of The World (LoTW), you may submit all your QSOs with the Republic of South Sudan stations anytime. There is no need to hold them out of your log or do anything differently from what you already have been doing. You do not need to assign country names or identifiers. After we issue certificates to the Republic of South Sudan license holders, LoTW will make matches and assign the correct entities automatically.”
As of July 14, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has not announced a prefix block for the Republic of South Sudan. For programmers and others who require use of the DXCC entity code, the code assigned to Republic of South Sudan is 521.
